Martin Dening, a farmer, and his family settled in the Volga German colony of Louis on 14 June 1766.  They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 25.

In 1788, Martin Dening and his family moved from Louis to Herzog. In 1796, Michael Dening and his family moved from Herzog to Mariental.

The 1767 census records that Martin Dening came from the German village of Bitsch in the region of Lothringen.
