Michael Hamm, son of Michael Hamm (1758-1831) & Helena Esau (1759-1834), was born 25 April 1790 in Orloff, Gross Werder, part of the Ladekopp Mennonite Congregation in West Prussia. [Today Ladekopp is located in Poland and is known as Lubieszewo.] He married 25 October 1821 to Helena Klaassen, daughter of Dirk Klaassen (1765-1843) & Anna Penner (1769-1824). She was born 7 June 1798 in F├╝rstenwerder, Gross Werder, Prussia.

In 1852, Michael and his family moved to the Molotschna colony of Juschanlee. From there they moved to Hahnsau where they are listed in Household No. 9 on the 1857 Census.
