Johann Christian Hellbach, a saddle maker (Sattler), and his family settled in the Volga German colony of Merkel on 28 August 1766.  They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 45.

In 1789, Johann Heinrich Hellbach moved from Merkel to Galka. In 1797, Johann Heinrich Hellbach and his family moved from Galka to Astrakhan.

The 1767 census records that Johann Christian Hellbach came from Copenhagen, Denmark.
