Peter Hertz, a craftsman (Handwerker), settled in the Volga German colony of Mariental on 14 June 1766. He is recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 40 with his new bride, the widow of Christoph Müller.

The 1767 census records that Peter Hertz came from the German village of Cassel in the Kurtrier region.
