Jakob Kappell, a farmer, and his family arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 31 July 1766 aboard a Russian packet-boat under the command of Lieutenant Pyotr Malinkov.
They settled in the Volga German colony of Dietel on 1 July 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 33.
The 1767 census records that Jakob Kappell came from the German village of Trebur near Darmstadt.
