Johann Tobias Ockel, a farmer, and his wife Anna Maria settled in the Volga German colony of Bauer on 20 July 1766. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 12 along with a note that they relocated to the neighboring colony of Kratzke in 1768.

The 1798 census of Bauer records Johannes Ockel in Household No. Br60.

The 1767 census records that Johann Tobias Ockel came from the German village of Niederheimstadt in the Darmstadt region.
