Christian Richter, a miller (Müller), and his family (including stepchildren Gottfried and Anna Rosina Walter) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 8 August 1766 aboard the snow-brig Der Merkur under the command of Skipper Johann Heinrich Abelmann.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Stahl am Tarlyk on 13 August 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 24.

The 1767 census records that Christian Richter came from the German village of Zwickau in the region of Sachsen (Saxony).
