Thomas Weigel, a physician (Friseur), and his family settled in the Volga German colony of Herzog on 14 July 1766 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 27.

In 1794, Joseph Weigel moved from Herzog to Mariental.

The 1767 census records that Thomas Weigel came from the German village of Passau in the Ansbach region and that his wife Barbara came from the German village of Erlangen in the Bayreuth region.
