Nicolaus Zitzmann, son of Hans Zitzmann (9 February 1678 - 26 October 1741) & Margaretha Heuss (29 September 1686 - 24 March 1758), was born 5 October 1716 in Gersfeld (Röhn), Hessen, Germany, is an original Frank colonist. He married there on 28 August 1742 to Anna Maria Strauch, daughter of Johann Strauch. Some of the children of Nicolaus Zitzmann were born in Dorrnhof and some in Obernhausen, small villages near Gersfeld.

Nicolaus Zitzmann and his family arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 14 September 1766 aboard a ship under the comand of skipper Reders. Most of them evidently did not survive the journey to the Volga German colonies as only son Georg settled in the Volga German colony of Frank on 1 September 1767.  He is recorded in Frank on the 1767 census in Household No. 110.
